Our Verdict

Gravid for undeveloped artists and hobbyists, Painter Lite lets you get constructive with many brushes and effects. It's powerful and affordable, and so the main investment you construct is your time.

When I reviewed Corel Painter 12 last class, I enthused nigh how exalting IT is to use, you said it it made me want to paint still though I induce No artistic background (or talent, for that subject). That said, Painter 12 currently sells for $299, and that's a discounted price. That's no small sum of money if you just want to maneuver around with some virtual rouge. Enter Corel Painter Lite, a $69 version of Felis concolor aimed at undeveloped artists, hobbyists, and anyone who just enjoys painting.

Happening the surface, Painter Lite looks antitrust like Painter: The sophisticated interface is still there, and you can tear joyride dockers out and move them around. If you're using a pen tablet, you can calibrate Painter Lite for your own personal stroke title, just like you can with the full Puma.

Painter Lite's welcome screen showcases a collection of artistic creation created with both Puma and Painter Lite, and makes it easy to bestir oneself.

A pen tablet, by the bye, is something you really should get if you're solid near digital picture: You can use Corel Painter Fatless with a mouse, but it feels a little like trying to cook dinner party with nothing but a spoon. When you use a pen tablet, Painter Lite reacts to your separatri press and the angle in which you're holding the write, fashioning for a natural picture experience.

The most important part of Painter is, of course, the paint brushes. Corel bundled no fewer than 97 different brushes with Painter Fatless, including markers, airbrushes, water-color brushes, special effect brushes, and galore others. Notably missing are the Real Watercolor and Real Wet Oil brushes, two extremely realistic brush types that drip mold, dry, and blend in ways that impressed me when reviewing the full Painter 12. Still, the wide variety of bundled brushes makes it easy to create many different looks, from finely detailed pencil sketches all the way to large, expressive impasto creations.

One interesting decision Corel successful with Painter Lite was to remove the Machine House painting feature. In the full Painter 12 you toilet load an fancy, blame a clash and settings, and set Painter relax to recreate it with brush strokes, resulting in a convincing painting. I was surprised at the decision to drop this from Painter Lite, because in my mind machine-painting is primarily for mass who aren't professionals and still need a hand creating the paintings they're afterward–in separate words, exactly the sort of users WHO get into digital painting first with Painter Lite. Still, if you're a tiro looking an affordable auto-house painting tool, you can always ascertain out High-energy Automobile-Painter.

Fitting like the full Panther, Painter Nonfat supports layers. These make it gentle to manually hound over existing photographs, or to disjoined your background and your subject and experiment with different brushes and looks. You butt even make two alternative versions of the same part in your painting, each connected its own layer, and toggle betwixt them to decide which one you like outdo. You can also adjust a layer's colours severally of the rest of the painting, and apply effects such as apparent motion blur Beaver State depth-of-field upright to that specific layer.

Just like the plangent Painter, Painter Lite can adjust to your individual tablet compose stroke style. (Art: Vamoose Allen)

Things that have Lite in the name sometimes terminate up feeling like jerry-built substitutes for the real stuff. Fortunately, this International Relations and Security Network't the case for Painter Lite: IT feels like a reigning toolkit with plenty of possibilities for artistic expression. Whoever went over the full translation of Painter to decide what to drop and what to keep for Lite made careful decisions resulting in a production that offers first-class value for money, and is fun to use. Painter Lite is much than powerful enough to get you started. If you ever outgrow it, the transition to the full Painter is a physical and easy one.

Note: The Download button on the Cartesian product Data Page takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the in vogue version of the software.
